The Canadiens played their third pre-season game last night in Ottawa. The contest started out well enough for the visitor, trading chances with the Sens and seeing the score remain close in the first period, but some defensive miscues and an overall less engaged effort allowed Ottawa to run up the score in the second period, eventually claiming the 7-2 win.
It wasn’t a particularly good game for Jake Allen in net, nor David Savard on defence, but both veterans were likely caught out by how intense Ottawa decided to play, and not overly concerned with ramping up to that level in a pre-season contest.
Now fully aware that the Sens are intent on treating these matches like regular-season games, we can expect a better performance from the Canadiens tonight. That will start with Brendan Gallagher, who gets into his first tune-up game this year, but there are also several forwards in the lineup probably playing their final game in a Canadiens jersey before heading off to other leagues, and will be eager to make that final impression a good one.
Ryan Poehling is one of the players who should be the most engaged tonight. He went into the pre-season with a roster spot sitting on the table waiting to be grasped, but he hasn’t convincingly taken hold of it. Other players are outperforming him and look like they want a spot more, and that wasn’t what the coaches or fans were expecting from a player who helped lead his team to an AHL division title a year ago. Perhaps he felt he already had the place secure and didn’t need to expend all his energy in the pre-season, but he may find he’s one of of the players sent to Laval in the coming days if he doesn’t find another gear tonight.
He’ll be playing between Artturi Lehkonen and Jesse Ylönen, while the club has also opted to shift Mathieu Perreault to the middle on the third line; a position he hasn’t played much in recent years after shifting to the wing in Winnipeg. That could be another sign the coaching staff isn’t confident in its current choices for the fourth-line centre and wants to test out a different option.
Someone who has been making a good impression is Chris Wideman on defence, playing well defensively — the only player with a positive goal differential last night — and showing off his offensive skills as well. He added two more assists to his pre-season total, and gets another chance to build on his tally tonight in his second consecutive game.
