The Edmonton Oilers came out flat but some solid goaltending by Mikko Koskinen and two lamp-lighting thrusts by heralded newcomer wingers Warren Foegele and Zach Hyman got them a lead they would never give up.

In the third period Edmonton’s amazing power play took over, scoring two goals on two opportunities. The power play is clipping along at 50 per cent rate.

The 5-1 win was marked by Darnell Nurse’s dominating two-way play, including a few crushing hits.

The Grade A shots were Edmonton 10 and Arizona six. ( running count ).

Connor McDavid, 8. Two goals and an assist, but a few issues on defence. He and Keith allowed a low-high pass and one-timer Grade A shot against in the first. Scored in the second on a dangerous burst into the slot after 25 sweet seconds of o-zone passing with Draisaitl, Puljujarvi and Barrie. He gave up too much time and space on pass on Coyotes’ first goal. Ripped another good power play one-timer in the third. His pass off from the left circle led to Hyman’s power play goal in the third, then he scored his own power player snipe from the left side off a great RNH cross-ice knife of a pass. McD now has 11 points in four games, and the weird thing is he’s yet to bring his best game to the ice.

Jesse Puljujarvi, 6. He opened up the game with a wicked tip off an outside Nurse shot, but then was slow on the back check as Arizona broke in for their own Grade A chance.

Zach Hyman, 8. Two goals. Savvy snipe on Edmonton’s second goal, snapping it it in with little wind-up; there’s a difference between shooting and scoring, as Edmonton’s legendary skill coach Jim Fleming likes to say. Scored his second, another power play gimme, after tic-tac-toe passing, Barrie to McD to Barrie to RNH to McD to Draisaitl and Hyman in the crease.

Leon Draisaitl, 6. Not a bad game but a fairly quiet one. His two faceoff wins kicked off the game-killing power play goals in the third.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, 7. Three assists and now with six assists in four games. He lost Jay Beagle in the slot for a clear chance in the first, but Beagle missed the net on his backhander. Sharp pass to send Hyman in on his scoring breakaway. Great pass to McD on his power play goal.

Kailer Yamamoto, 6 . Some good work on the PK. He kept his feet moving and drew a penalty in the third.

Derek Ryan, 6 . Another solid game. Eight wins and just four face off losses.

Warren Foegele, 7. Beaty bull rush in the first, fighting by an Arizona d-man and slashing the puck into the net.

Zack Kassian, 5. Some OK physical and positional play and a smart pass on the Foegele goal.

Devin Shore, 5. He and Keith were culprits on a dangerous cross-seam pass and shot by Jacob Chychrun in the first. He set up Turrris for a hard Grade B one-timer in the third.

Kyle Turris, 6. After an early burst in the third, his line had a strong forechecking shift to settle things. A few shifts later ripped a good shot.

Brendan Perlini, 5. Another quiet game. Time to slot in Tyler Benson?

Darnell Nurse, 8. He played a dominating game, 24:51 of near perfect two-way hockey. He won about 90 per cent of his battles, right? He was given credit for eight hits. Threw a solid takedown slam on Travis Boyd in the first. A few shifts later, the 21st Century’s version of the Edmonton Express pancaked Chychrun to the ice. Late in the first he again showed off his Eddie Shore-vibe, blocked a shot then rushing up ice for a partial breakaway. His hard and sharp charge up ice helped create a 2-on-1 and Hyman’s shorthanded goal.

Tyson Barrie, 5. Two assists, but his defensive woes continued. He did cut down on the major mistakes. Made a turnover and allowed cross-seam on AZ’s first and only goal in the third. Solid quarterback work on the power play, though. He won a key puck battle on Edmonton’s first power play goal.

Duncan Keith, 6. Had another decent Whitey Stapleton kind of game. He got beat on the rush by $6 million man Loui Eriksson, who moved in fast and got off an tricky backhander. But, once again, made numerous solid plays with the puck.

Cody Ceci, 6. Another fine game. Got a Grade A shot with Hyman’s total-eclipse-of-the-sun screen late in the second.

Evan Bouchard, 7. Made a nifty own-zone pass to help set off McDavid and Hyman on a first period 2-on-1. Next, Bouch’s sharp seizure of the puck kicked off Foegele’s great rush. Let loose with a wicked sharp-angle slapper late in the second.

Slater Koekkoek, 5. OK game from OK player.

Mikko Koskinen, 7 . Not a lot of work but, crucially, he handled everything when the game was close. Solid stops on Chychrun and Ryan Dzingel in the first and Eriksson in the second.
