It took two weeks, but on Saturday night the Canadiens put a stop to their six-game slippery skid and finally got one for the good guys. Taking on their nemesis, the Detroit Red Wings, who for some reason had Montreal’s number all last season sweeping them in each of the four meetings they had, Montreal handed the team its worst loss of what’s been quite a strong start to the season.
It started with Ben Chiarot making up for the penalty he took that resulted in Detroit getting on the board first, and ended with Mathieu Perreault taking home a natural hat trick that had him, the fans in the Bell Centre, and the fans at home taking it all in with tears of joy.
It was a big win for the Canadiens, in more ways than one with the 6-1 victory, who now hopefully have the confidence to start digging out of the hole they’ve gotten themselves into.
Tonight the Habs will take on the new kids on the block (no, not Donnie, Joe, Jordan, Jon, and Danny), the NHL’s newest team, the Seattle Kraken, at Climate Pledge Arena. Lines at Monday afternoon’s practice looked pretty much like the final lines of Saturday’s game, so one can only hope that it will bring as much luck as it did then.

Starting their inaugural season on the road with five consecutive games, the Kraken are still figuring things out with a 1-4-1 record. After waiting 97 years for another NHL game, Seattle finally had its night. During their first-ever home game on Saturday night, the Kraken started the third period with a 2-1 lead before facing four unanswered Vancouver Canucks goals.
One would think that the Canadiens should have their game faces on tonight as the Kraken are going to want to give their new fans something better to cheer about on their home turf.
With that said, there are a few Habs who are overdue for a goal and could be quite determined to finally light the lamp. Josh Anderson should have scored a gajillion goals on Saturday the way he was playing and shooting in true Anderson form, and Cole Caufield really started getting out of his head and doing his shooting thing, too, picking up an assist on Perreault’s second goal of the night. We can thank coach Durcharme for the advice he gave to the young winger when he emphasized to “get closer to the puck, to play with speed, and to not become too predictable by stopping to skate.”
With Shea Weber out, it’s expected that Jeff Petry, who’s no stranger to stepping up to fill the captain's skates when he’s out, will do just that again this year. Any day now. Weber has joined the team in Seattle for a few days, so perhaps having his leadership presence around, even if it’s just in the locker room, will be enough to keep the spark going for a second consecutive win.
It’s going to be interesting to see how these two teams match up, especially with both teams eager to start racking up some W’s.
