The Toronto Blue Jays will be playing their 2020 home games at Sahlen Field in Buffalo, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi has confirmed.
The team has spent the last week looking for an alternate site for home games after the federal government denied their plan to stage games at the Rogers Centre in Toronto due to the COVID-19 pandemic concerns in the United States.
Sahlen Field is home to the Blue Jays’ triple-A affiliate the Buffalo Bisons and its lighting and clubhouses are currently not up to major league standards. On Friday morning, Davidi reported that Blue Jays staff arrived in Buffalo Thursday to begin planning the necessary upgrades.
The Blue Jays’ first home games are July 29 and 30 against the Washington Nationals as the back part of a home-and-home series. All four games are expected to be played in D.C. with the Blue Jays designated as the home team in the final two games. According to Davidi, a home series against the Philadelphia Phillies from July 31-Aug. 2 could be a target for the team to debut in Buffalo. If not, a home series against the Miami Marlins beginning Aug. 11 would be the targeted date.
The Blue Jays explored multiple solutions to its home field problems this week, including PNC Park in Pittsburgh and Camden Yards in Baltimore, but local governments in those regions denied the Blue Jays’ request to use the facilities.
The Blue Jays open the 60-game regular season on Friday in Tampa against the Rays.
