The winless Montreal Canadiens fell to 0-4 on the season following a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the San Jose Sharks Tuesday at the Bell Centre. Boos from a modest home crowd of 16,095 rained down on the struggling squad, who failed to beat goalie Adin Hill on 21 shots. Erik Karlsson and Timo Meier had three points apiece, while Jonathan Dahlen scored his first two NHL career goals.
San Jose wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, lighting the lamp 1:22 into the contest. It was originally awarded to Meier, but in the end it was determined Dahlen tipped the Brent Burns point blast to open scoring.

Just over two minutes later, Dahlen struck again. The son of former Shark Ulf Dahlen was left alone to pot the rebound following the initial shot by Logan Couture to make it 2-0 before the foam could settle on everyone’s beers.

Brendan Gallagher tried to spark his team by dropping the gloves against Karlsson, but the defenceman didn’t bite and Gallagher got an extra two minutes in the box for his troubles. With 38 seconds left in the first period, Karlsson fired a precise point shot through traffic that snuck past Allen to give the Sharks a commanding 3-0 lead heading to the dressing rooms.

If you’re feeling low, you’re not alone. Let’s cut to some first intermission thoughts from the Liveblog commenters:
“I’m not going to throw in the towel on the season just yet, but boy do they look awful out there. It’s one thing if they hung around in games and lost in OT/shootout, worked hard for 60 minutes, and lost but that’s not the case. There is absolutely no spark and most of the team seems completely disinterested. The usual issues continue to plague this team which is lack of scoring and the powerplay. Now you can add serious defensive issues to that list.” -Arvy Bee
“And to think I almost bought tickets for tonight. I think I will hold off a few months. I don’t want to panic however I’m almost there. Back to squid games.” -George Marly
“Can they bring Shea Weber back as an assistant coach? Guys might put more of an effort on the ice if they saw him behind the bench giving them his famous death stare.” -Bob Taylor
The Sharks did more damage early in the second. With Cole Caufield in the box for slashing to prevent a goal-scoring opportunity, Meier beat Allen with a patient, blocker side blast to give the Sharks a 4-0 lead.

The Canadiens quickly followed it up with one of their best chances of the night from Josh Anderson, who couldn’t beat Hill on a breakaway. The Habs failed to score on a man-advantage after the fourth goal, and remain scoreless on the power play this season after going 0-2 Tuesday night. That’s when the boos started coming.

By the third, the Habs had narrowed the gap in shots, but the Sharks were effective in keeping those shots to the outside with Hill undisturbed in front. Chris Wideman had a golden opportunity after jumping into the play, but he missed the wide open net. Back on the power play, Kevin Labanc wired a tape-to-tape pass from Karlsson past Allen to extend San Jose’s lead to 5-0. The Sharks went 2-4 with the man-advantage.

The game ended with more boos coming from the rafters. On Thursday, the Canadiens will hope for a better effort when they meet old pal Jesperi Kotkaniemi and the Carolina Hurricanes at the Bell Centre. More thoughts from the Liveblog commenters:

2. “I get the fact that we’re playing without some of our strongest Leaders right now. And I also get the fact that we have a lot of new players that are trying to learn our system. I truly do! … But I can’t and won’t excuse the lack of effort and intensity. It’s just sad.” -Carin Latzel
