Not many NHL general managers would hold a news conference after playing only four games. Montreal is different, of course.
On Wednesday, Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin covered a variety of topics. Front and center was the status of his contract, which expires at the end of the season. Would he like to stay on as GM of the Canadiens? “In a perfect world, yes,” he said.
The Canadiens are 0-4 and are coming off a 5-0 loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday.
“There is no reason, especially, but Montreal is a different market,” said Bergevin when asked why there was a media availability.
“It’s a special market. As we know, sometimes tension is higher. ... I feel as the hockey boss, I think I should show my support to the team and also my concern. But I believe the answer is within.”
Separately, Bergevin said that Joel Edmundson’s father is battling lung cancer and that the defenseman is at home with his family. “Family comes first,” Bergevin said.
Bergevin also provided an update on captain Shea Weber, who is out for the season with a long list of injuries. And though the Canadiens have not officially ruled out a return for Weber next year, Bergevin made it clear it is not a very likely scenario.
“I think it’s a long shot,” Bergevin said. “You never know, but I would say it’s a long shot.”
