The Boston Red Sox and Toronto Blue Jays each won on Friday night, strengthening their hopes for an American League wild-card berth. Meanwhile, the New York Yankees saw their lead shrink but still moved one win from clinching a playoff spot.
The Yankees entered the day needing a win and a Red Sox or Seattle Mariners loss to clinch a postseason berth. Their ninth-inning rally fell short in a 4-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays, while the Red Sox beat the Washington Nationals 4-2 and the Blue Jays beat the Baltimore Orioles 6-4.
Playing late Friday night, the Mariners fell 2-1 the Los Angeles Angels, reducing the Yankees' magic number to one.
Boston (90-70) holds the final wild-card spot, one game back of New York (91-69) and one game ahead of the Mariners and Blue Jays (89-71), who lost two of three in this week's three-game series against the Yankees in Toronto.
All teams have two games remaining.
