Canadiens set as underdogs at Maple Leafs with Price injured - Sportsnet.ca

The Montreal Canadiens will not have starting goaltender Carey Price in the lineup when they visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night as +125 underdogs on the NHL odds at sportsbooks monitored by OddsShark.com.

Price will remain in Montreal for treatment after suffering an undisclosed injury on Monday night in an overtime win over the Edmonton Oilers. That sets the stage for backup Jake Allen to take over netminding duties for Wednesday night's matchup at Scotiabank Arena.

Despite being forced to leave morning skate after taking a hard shot off his blocker hand, Price backstopped the Canadiens to an important 3-2 victory over the visiting Oilers on Monday. That triumph marked the Canadiens' fourth win in five outings, further solidifying the team's grip on the fourth and final playoff spot in the North Division.

Montreal now sits eight points up on both Calgary and Vancouver in the divisional standings, and holds games in hand on each of its beleaguered rivals. Allen has also been a steady presence in goal, outpacing Price with a 2.23 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage. The Fredericton native has seen limited action of late, going 1-1-2 in just four appearances since the beginning of March. However, Allen has been steady in recent dates with Toronto, allowing just eight total goals while winning four of his past five starts.

The Maple Leafs have some goaltending intrigue of their own as they prepare for Wednesday night's matchup as -145 favourites at online sports betting sites. Jack Campbell has been stellar since taking over the crease from injured starter Frederik Andersen, racking up a 9-0-0 record. The 29-year-old's performance has been key to the Maple Leafs' recent steady form, which has produced wins in seven of their past eight outings.

Campbell's strong play has fuelled speculation that he is poised to take over as Toronto's starting netminder on a more permanent basis, with -160 odds favouring him to be between the pipes for the team's first playoff game this spring. In addition, he's a short -190 wager to be the team's starter on opening night next season, Campbell has been steady in two previous appearances versus Montreal, allowing just two total goals while going 1-0-1.

Also on the Wednesday NHL odds, the Oilers will try to keep pace with first-place Toronto in the division race as they visit the Ottawa Senators as -180 betting favourites. Winners in just two of their past seven road dates, the Oilers now trail the Maple Leafs by seven points in the standings. However, Edmonton sports an unblemished 7-0-0 record this season against the last-place Senators, who will be riding a two-game home slide into Wednesday's contest.
