Canadiens' Carey Price out at least a week with concussion - Montreal Gazette

Goaltender sustained a head injury during first period of loss to Oilers on Monday after returning to the lineup Saturday against Ottawa.

Not only is Canadiens goaltender Carey Price injured for the second time this month, he might have continued playing after sustaining a concussion.

“Sometimes symptoms come a little bit after,” interim head coach Dominique Ducharme said Tuesday during a video conference from Edmonton. “I can’t tell you exactly when he started to feel bad. I’m sure if it would have been (sooner) he would have told us. I think it came when he got off the ice and sat down in the locker room.”

Price will miss at least one week with the head injury and has been placed under the NHL’s concussion protocol. The incident occurred 12 minutes into Monday’s 4-1 loss to the Oilers, after he was interfered with by Alex Chiasson on a Connor McDavid goal that was disallowed. No penalty was assessed on the play, although Ducharme challenged the goal.

Price remained in net for the remainder of the period, stopping all seven shots he faced, but was replaced by Jake Allen to begin the second.

“I know (Chiasson) wanted to get close to him and take his eyes away, making sure he wasn’t seeing the puck,” Ducharme said. “He went pretty close. The goal was disallowed. I won’t comment more than that.

“I had, personally, no reason to think otherwise, that he wasn’t feeling well,” Ducharme added. “I think he’s been through a lot. If he doesn’t tell us, we cannot diagnose from the bench. I think he just felt bad toward the end (of the period) or when he came to the room.”

Price, 33, returned to the lineup last Saturday, against Ottawa, after missing six games with a lower-body injury, sustained in the second period of an April 5 game, against Edmonton when Josh Archibald skated into him and his head lurched back. Price remained in the game that night as well.

Price allowed three Senators goals on 14 shots in his return, but produced a solid 20 minutes against the Oilers on Monday. The winner of the Hart and Vézina Trophies in 2015, Price has a 12-7-5 record this season along with a 2.64 average and .901 save percentage. He has one shutout.

Price has been plagued by lower-body injuries throughout his career. In his 14th season with the Canadiens, he also has been diagnosed with two other concussions. He missed 13 games in March 2018 along with the last three regular-season contests in April 2012.

While Allen will be the starter Wednesday (10 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN Radio 690, 98.5 FM) when the Canadiens conclude their two-game series against the Oilers, Cayden Primeau is with the team as an emergency call-up from the AHL’s Laval Rocket. And Ducharme said Primeau will probably start Friday or Saturday at Calgary.

“We like how the kid (Primeau) is handling himself,” Ducharme said. “He’s been really solid with the Rocket. There are times when a young guy’s coming in and he’s playing in a big game. We’re confident when the time comes he’s going to be sharp.”

Allen has a 7-8-4 record, but has frequently been victimized by a lack of offence, deserving a better fate in many games. He has a 2.52 GAA along with a .914 save percentage.

“Obviously it’s unfortunate for Carey, but that’s what I’m here for,” Allen said Monday night. “You’ve got to step up when guys go down. That’s my job. I’ve always got to be ready.”
