Great start from Ryu, Jays beat Yankees - Bluebird Banter

Yankees 3 Blue Jays 7

There are few things I like more than a win against the Yankees.

That was a pleasure to watch, at least until the eighth inning. Hyun Jin Ryu was terrific, as usual. Until two outs in the sixth, he had faced the minimum. He had allowed a single to lead off the first, but then got a double play. He didn’t allow anther base runner until the fifth, when he gave up a one-out single and quickly erased him with another double play. He Tired a bit in the seventh, Gary Sanchez reached on a one-out Cavan Biggio throwing error. A double and a ground out scored the unearned run and ended Ryu’s night. David Phelps came in and ended the inning.

Clint Frazier led off the eighth by lining one off Phelps back. The Jays, smartly, pulled him from the game. Might as well check him out. After that it got a little more interesting than we would have liked.

Jordan Romano came in, got Jay Bruce to strikeout. But then DJ LeMahieu doubled, Giancarlo Stanton singled and, suddenly it was a 6-3 game. Aaron Judge hit a fly out and Gary Sanchez walked. That was it for Romano, who didn’t look good at all.

Julian Merryweather, who we didn’t think we’d see tonight, came in looking for a four-out save to get out of the inning. His second pitch bounced and, thankfully, Gary Sanchez started towards second. Danny Jansen got on the ball quick, threw to first, Vlad, quickly and accurately, threw to second and Sanchez was tagged out to end the inning. Yankees’ fans already don’t like Sanchez much. That won’t help.

Tim Mayza came in for the ninth. I was sure Charlie would leave Merryweather in for the save, but then, throwing just two pitches, he should be available tomorrow. And we scored another run in the bottom of the eighth, you should be able to trust a four-run lead with anyone in your bullpen. He gave up a leadoff single, but then got a ground ball to Vlad at first, who touched second and threw to Bo (well wide of Bo, but close enough, who caught it and made the tag. Nice play by Vlad. Vlad also made a very nice stretch, getting us the last out, on a ground ball by Gio Urshela. Bo made a nice play, on the ball, and his throw was good, but it was called safe on the field. Vlad looked like he though it was out and, sure enough, the replay showed he was barely out.

And we got plenty of offense.

The nice part was that Cavan Biggio and Rowdy Tellez, who have had a rough start to the season with the bats, chipped in. Rowdy hit his first home run of the year, his second hit of the year. His teammates gave him the silent treatment in the dugout.

And Biggio was 2 for 4. We won’t mention his error here. Marcus Semien also homered.

We managed 10 hits and 4 walks. Bo, Vlad (now with a 1.114 OPS), and Cavan had two hits each. Josh Palacios was 1 for 3 with a walk and 2 RBI. Everyone in the lineup reached base. Lourdes was 0 for 3, but was hit by pitch, and Danny Jansen was 0 or 3 with a walk.

Jays of the Day: Ryu (.243 WPA) and Palacios (.164). And I’m giving one to Vlad for the 2 for 4 (.067 WPA) plus the great defense tonight. I’m good with the Jays leaving him at first and never having him play across the diamond. He’s looking more and more comfortable at first.

No Suckage Jays. Tellez had the low mark at -.052 even with the home run.

They play again tomorrow at 1:00 Eastern. Ross Stripling vs. Corey Kluber. I hope Kate knows that.

We had 697 comments in the GameThread. EMK led us to victory. Good job sir. And we had a visit from Joshua Diemert, from Pinstripe Alley.
