It wasn’t a great game, in case you missed it due to website troubles of the Edmonton Oilers. The Oilers failed to host the game due to technical difficulties.

I was fortunate that I got it on an NBC affiliate on my Telus package.

The one standout was Edmonton’s goalie Stuart Skinner, who looked as sharp in net as I’ve seen him as a pro. It was a shame he missed out on a shut-out. Edmonton lost in OT after a lame penalty call against Kailer Yamamoto led to a Seattle power play.

Here are the player grades for the match.

Zach Hyman, 7. Edmonton’s best forward. Played with strength and skill. His screen in the first led to a loose puck in the crease and two Grade A chances by the Seattle hockey fam in Edmonton, first linemate Kailer Yamamoto and then his long-time inspiration, Derek Ryan, getting off shots. Late in the first, he pounced on a bouncing Tyson Barrie shot in the slot and backhanded it on net, only to be thwarted by Philipp Grubauer. Early in the third, he won a battle on the forecheck, with the puck going to Yamo who set up Ryan in the slot for a Grade A shot. He was a bit slow to block Mark Giordano’s tieing goal point shot late in the third.

Derek Ryan, 7. He and his line buzzed the game at times and were Edmonton’s most effective trio. Almost scored on his first shot, a five-alarmer on a first period scramble. He got too aggressive covering for a pinching Slater Koekkoek, permitting a Seattle two-on-one chance. But he hustled hard to break up a two-on-one a bit later, deflecting a pass away.

Kailer Yamamoto, 7. Some good work with Ryan and Hyman. Made a slippery and rapid move from behind the net to create a dangerous crease opportunity in the first. He went too hard covering on a failed Broberg pinch in the second and allowed a two-on-one Krak chance. Stole the puck in the third and missed the net from the inner slot. He got called for a penalty in OT that was not a penalty. You’re not allowed to lift another player’s stick any more? Hometown call, for sure.

Tyler Benson, 6. More lively in this one, made a number of good passes. But still not much sizzle, other than mixing it up with Jamie Oleksiak in a scrum.

Ryan McLeod, 6. He took a hard hit to make a o-zone pass in the second. Skated harder in this one, but he and Benson weren’t able to create much o-zone time, save for a few shifts in the third. That said, they gave up little in their own zone. He gave away the puck in OT, leading to a two-on-one.

Colton Sceviour, 4. Another quiet game.

Brendan Perlini, 6. He got off a dangerous one-timer in the first off a Seth Griffith feed, then took a pass, wheeled towards the blueline and into the middle of the ice where he unleashed another hard outside wrister. But we also saw some of his limitations in the first. He’s not a great passer of the puck. He went hard to the net to tip in an outside Koekkoek shot from the high slot for the game’s first goal.

Devin Shore, 5. He gave away the puck to Jordan Eberle in the first leading to a Grade B chance. He won the faceoff to rev up the virtuous cycle on Edmonton’s first goal. His third period wide-out with the puck led to a Seattle two-on-one and wicked shot that Skinner stopped.

Seth Griffith, 5. Made a few nice passes in limited time.

James Hamblin, 4. Didn’t get much ice time. Quiet game.

Brad Malone, 5. He got into a first period scrap and landed a few punches, took none. Otherwise not much.

Cooper Marody, 6. Pounced on a slot rebound and almost scored in the second.

Slater Koekkoek, 7.  Edmonton’s best d-man. He played a smart, aggressive and effective game. A number of strong defensive plays in front of the Oiler net in the first.

Tyson Barrie, 7. Very active in the first, strong, quick and deft moving the puck. Made a sliding stick check in the slot in OT to thwart a Krak chance.

Philip Broberg, 6. A high event game. He showed quick feet walking the line in the first to put a puck on net. A moment later he had a good shift on the power play, winning a puck battle and making some good passes. He fanned on a shot in the second, leading to some major Krak zone time and a few dangerous shots. Protected the puck well under pressure to advance it out of the Oil zone. He took a feed from Hyman and took it hard to the net for a good opportunity. A moment later he either stumbled or got hooked to the ice and Seattle had a great chance on the turnover, but his partner Berglund got a stick on the ensuing shot. He broke up a two-on-one in the third, with a sliding stop, then made another defensive slot stop late in the game.

Filip Berglund, 6. Smart, efficient, another game where he made all the right moves. When he made one error to allow a two-on-one, his partner Broberg bailed him out. He stretched to deflect away an Alexander Wennberg slot shot in the third. He would have done well to tie up Schwartz on the tieing goal.

William Lagesson, 6. Quiet game but that’s a good thing for a d-man. Blocked a key shot on Seattle’s OT power play.

Phil Kemp, 5. He blew a tire in the first, wiped out at the Oil blueline, which create a Grade B shot for the Kraks. But a quiet and low event game otherwise.

Stuart Skinner, 8. Edmonton’s best player. He tracked and squared up to the puck well. A few solid saves in the first, but nothing too dangerous coming his way. He made trouble for himself, though, giving up a rebound on a far angle shot, with Calle Jarnkrok getting a Grade A shot near the crease. He got peppered in the second but stood up to it. He made a huge stop on a wicked Jordan Eberle power play slot shot late in the second. He made a great save on a two-on-one one-timer half way through the third. He was perfect until he got screened on Giordano’s point shot late in the third, which was tipped in front by Jaden Schwartz. Another big save in OT, this one on a Giordano slapper. Had little chance on the winning goal.
