Zack Kassian has entered the league's concussion protocol, Oilers coach Dave Tippett said Friday, one day after the Edmonton forward hit his head on the ice during a fight with Vancouver Canucks forward Zack MacEwen in a preseason game.
Tippett said the bump on Kassian’s head has gone down and is hopeful the player avoided a serious injury.
Kassian had already lost his helmet when he took a blow from MacEwen. He fell and appeared motionless for a few moments, and MacEwen and officials immediately motioned for trainers to attend to him on the ice.
Kassian had a towel on the right side of his head as he glided off the ice with assistance before heading to the dressing room.
"He’s like my brother sitting next to me in the locker room. Seeing him like that on the ice makes me sick to my stomach," forward Derek Ryan said afterward. "It’s a tough feeling. I haven’t seen him yet, but I heard he’s doing all right.”
Oilers coach Dave Tippett said the team will find out more Friday about Kassian.
"He's got a pretty good bump on his head from hitting the ice but he was in good spirits and was telling jokes when I came and saw him after the game," Tippett said. “It’s one of those ones that upsets you when that happens. ... We’ll see where he is tomorrow.”
“It’s scary, it’s terrible, it’s not cool,” Canucks defenseman Quinn Hughes added. “It probably didn’t need to happen.”
Kassian, 30, totaled 60 points, including 30 goals, in 138 games from 2018-20, but he had just five points (two goals, three assists) in 27 games last season, his sixth with the Oilers.
