The move was made Monday afternoon, just hours before the Canadiens were required to file their 23-man roster for the start of the NHL season. The acquisition leaves the Canadiens with 24 bodies, and that’s not good news for Ryan Poehling.
After practice Monday, coach Dominique Ducharme said Poehling would be on the ice with the Canadiens Tuesday morning, but now he is likely to be sent to the Laval Rocket. He’s the logical choice for demotion because he can be sent down without being placed on waivers.
The 25-year-old Brooks is another a smallish forward, checking in at 5-foot-10 and 185 pounds. He has four goals and four assists in 18 regular-season NHL games and also played two playoff games against the Canadiens earlier this year.
The Canadiens are happy with their top three centres: Nick Suzuki, Christian Dvorak and Jake Evans, and Brooks will battle Cédric Paquette and Mathieu Perreault for ice time on the fourth line.
The Canadiens made two roster moves earlier Monday. They sent goaltender Cayden Primeau back to the Laval Rocket, while junior-age defenceman Kaiden Guhle was sent back to the Prince Albert Raiders of the Western Hockey League.
