Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Henry Ruggs will be charged with DUI resulting in death for his involvement in a fatal crash Tuesday morning, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department announced.
Ruggs remained on the scene and "showed signs of impairment" before being transported to a local hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, according to the police report. He was later booked into jail and is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
Police responded to the crash at 3:39 a.m. local time. The preliminary investigation indicated that the front of Ruggs' Chevrolet Corvette collided with the rear of a Toyota Rav4. Responding fire department personnel located a deceased victim in the latter vehicle.
The victim was identified as a 23-year-old woman. Ruggs' girlfriend, Kiara Washington, was a passenger in his vehicle and was treated for serious injuries.
Ruggs' attorney, David Chesnoff, released a statement following the accident.
"On behalf of our client Henry Ruggs III we are conducting our own investigation as of this writing and ask everyone to reserve judgment until all the facts are gathered," Chesnoff said.
The Raiders also addressed the incident Tuesday.
"The Raiders are aware of an accident involving Henry Ruggs Ill that occurred this morning in Las Vegas," the team said in a statement. "We are devastated by the loss of life and our thoughts and prayers go out to the victim's family. We are in the process of gathering information and will have no further comment at this time."
The Raiders selected Ruggs with the No. 12 overall pick in last year's draft.
