‘Canada is a football nation.’ What they’re saying about the men’s national soccer team’s win over Mexico - Toronto Star

The Canadian men’s national team has taken first place in World Cup qualifying standings after defeating ninth-ranked Mexico 2-1 in the frozen tundra of Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton.

Beşiktaş striker Cyle Larin scored twice to secure the one-point lead in the standings after the U.S. drew with Jamaica earlier Tuesday night.

Mexico had not lost in Canada since the 1990 North American Cup and had not dropped a qualifier against the Canadians since October 1976. Canada has not beaten Mexico in any competition since 2000.

Here’s what some some fans, media and star athletes are saying about the victory:

Canadian soccer icon Christine Sinclair, Tokyo Olympic gold medallist, enjoyed the much talked about unique celebration in the snowbank after Larin’s second goal:

Toronto Raptors star Pascal Siakam gave his opinion on that goal:

Sporting News’ Simon Borg called Canada’s new position in the standings “a scenario that felt unthinkable just a few months ago, but it’s now a reality ...”

Mexican reporter Gerardo Velázquez de León gave a bleak opinion of the Mexican side:

Former Toronto FC and national team forward Dwayne De Rosario shared his excitement about the victory and standing:

Jason Davis, Sirius FM soccer radio host, revealed Canada’s fighting secret:

Spanish journalist Alexis Blázquez, also known as Mister Chip, is in awe of Team Canada’s progress:

CBS Sports writer Chuck Booth presented his top three takeaways from the match. Number two will delight Canada Soccer fans: “I have no words for how ridiculous this ending was:”

Prior to the game, everybody wanted to talk about the frigid weather.

Here’s what Mexican soccer fans and media are saying about Edmonton’s ‘Iceteca’ ahead of the Canada-Mexico match

And let’s give Canada Soccer the final word:

There are still six more games in CONCACAF qualifying on the road to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Canada is looking to play in its second ever World Cup appearance and first since 1986.

The top three teams advance while the fourth place team in qualifying have a second attempt in a playoff.
