Remember when this used to be fun?

For most of a 25-year span — briefly interrupted by a Lay’s potato chips spokesman who shall not be named — the Vancouver Canucks were entertaining and consistently interesting. From Pavel Bure to the West Coast Express to the Sedin twins, the club played entertaining hockey. For a generation from 1990 through to 2015, the franchise was consistently worth the price of admission.

The Canucks also won their fair share of games. From 1990 through to 2015, in fact, only eight NHL teams performed better in the regular season. Only four scored more goals.

This stretch lifted the Canucks from the “NHL’s Clippers” status the franchise endured for most of the 1970s and 1980s and cemented the club as one that could rely on generational support in a wealthy Canadian metropolis. The business thrived. Vancouver became a signature NHL marketplace.

But the good times have come to a halt. Since 2015, only five teams have had a lower points percentage in the regular season. Only six have scored fewer goals.

On Wednesday, the Canucks served up their latest helping of sludge to fans. While the team actually played pretty well overall, Vancouver lost its fifth consecutive game to a juggernaut Colorado Avalanche team that played poorly after the first 10 minutes and still came away with two points, mostly because the Canucks can’t kill a penalty.

The Avalanche won the game on Wednesday in a style reminiscent of how the Canucks used to beat teams in the prime Sedin years. It wasn’t a good performance from Colorado, but its roster so thoroughly outclasses Vancouver’s talent-wise that it could get away with putting it in cruise control after asserting its dominance early.
