Elks fire president, GM, coach after missing playoffs - Sportsnet.ca

The Edmonton Elks have fired president/CEO Chris Presson, general manager Brock Sunderland and coach Jaime Elizondo.

The moves came Monday, three days after the Elks finished a 3-11 season.

Presson came to the Elks in 2019 after serving as president of the Northern Arizona Suns of the G League.

Sunderland was hired by the Elks in 2017 after a run as assistant general manager of the Ottawa Redblacks.

Elizondo was in his first year as head coach after serving as offensive co-ordinator for Tampa Bay of the XFL and offensive co-ordinator for the Redblacks.

The Elks finished tied with the Redblacks for the worst record in the CFL this season and went 0-7 at home. The miserable season included a postponed home game after a COVID-19 outbreak, forcing the team to play three games in seven days to finish the campaign.

Under Sunderland, the Elks missed the playoffs in two of three seasons.

The Elks have brought longtime CFL GM and coach Wally Buono on board as a consultant to help in the search for a general manager.

“Wally is unrivalled as a winner in this league and we have every confidence that with his help we will find the general manager that will lead this team back to excellence,” said Elks Board of Directors chair Ian Murray.

The Elks Board of Directors says it has started a search for permanent replacements of the CEO and general manager positions.

Allan Watt, the team’s executive director of marketing, has been named interim chief operating officer.
