The Cleveland Browns have issued a statement that they plan to release star receiver Odell Beckham Jr..
In a statement issued Friday morning, Browns executive vice president of football operations and general manager Andrew Berry wrote:
“After careful consideration, internal discussions and conversations with Odell and his representation, we’ve determined that it is in the best interest of all parties involved that Odell no longer play for the Cleveland Browns. We appreciate all his efforts and contributions while in Cleveland, but we’ve just reached a point where it is best that we move forward as a team without Odell. We are finalizing the process of granting Odell his release and we wish him well as he continues his career.”
Beckham Jr. was excused from a second straight practice on Thursday after a video posted by his father created a rift with the team.
Odell Beckham Sr. shared a video Tuesday on social media – hours before the trade deadline – highlighting times when quarterback Baker Mayfield didn’t throw passes to the three-time Pro Bowler when he was open this season.
The Browns have been meeting with Beckham Jr. to try to work out a resolution.
Beckham Jr. will become an unrestricted free agent if he clears waivers.
Mayfield only threw two passes toward Beckham in Sunday’s 15-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. He had just one catch for six yards, and his other target was a high incompletion in the fourth quarter.
Since returning from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, Beckham has 17 catches for 232 yards and no touchdowns this season. He’s also been playing with a sprained right shoulder that he hurt against Arizona on Oct. 17.
