The Canadiens suffered a double loss Saturday as they dropped a 3-2 overtime decision to the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena and lost goaltender Jake Allen, who suffered a possible concussion when he collided with Dylan Larkin late in the first period.

Larkin scored his second goal of the game at 2:41 to give Detroit their first win in three tries against Montreal this season.

The Canadiens pulled even early in the third when Chris Wideman scored from the slot with a high shot to the far post. Artturi Lehkonen and Robby Fabbri crashed into the end boards, but the puck came back to Lehkonen, who was lying on the ice when he swept the puck in front to a wide-open Wideman.

The momentum of this game changed after Allen was pulled off the ice with 48 seconds remaining in the first period to undergo the NHL’s concussion protocol. Larkin had step on Jeff Petry as he drove to the net when Petry gave him a shove from behind. An off-balance Larkin then plowed into Allen with 1:09 remaining. Larkin appeared to take the worst of the collision but, after resuming his position in the net, Allen left the ice at the next whistle and was replaced by Samuel Montembeault.

Montreal failed to score on a power play that overlapped the first two periods and the Red Wings took a 2-1 lead when they scored on the first two shots against Montembeault.

Larkin showed he was no worse for wear when he tied the score with a shot from an impossible angle. He launched it from the goal line, which went behind Montembeault and went in off the far post. It was a great shot, but also one Montembeault could have stopped if he had been in position.

The Red Wings took the lead 45 seconds later when Pius Suter scored on  a drive from the high slot that found an opening between the goaltender’s body and his arm.

Montembeault was more comfortable after the two early goals and made 22 saves before Larkin potted the winner.

Ryan Poehling opened the scoring early in the first period as the Canadiens took advantage of a Detroit turnover in the neutral zone. Poehling used Red Wings defenceman Marc Staal as a screen and Alex Nedeljkovic was unable to track the puck as Poehling put the shot from the right faceoff circle through Staal’s legs. It was the first goal since Jan. 13, 2020, for  Poehling, who was recalled from the Laval Rocket earlier in the week.

Michael Pezzetta picked up an assist on Poehling’s goal for his first point in the NHL.

Neither team was able to score on the power play. The Red Wings went 0-for-2 with three shots on goal, while the Canadiens were 0-for-3 with four shots.

This was the first half of a back-to-back series for the Canadiens, who will face the Boston Bruins at TD Garden on Sunday (7 p.m.,TSN2, RDS, TSN-690, 98.5 FM) .
