VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – The Vancouver Canucks are revealing the practice the team cancelled over the weekend was due to a false positive COVID-19 test.
The hockey club’s coach is nevertheless describing the event as a wake up call for his team.
Given how close we are to opening night, when the Canucks cancelled practice on Sunday, there were fears one or multiple players might have to miss out due to what was initially described as a potential COVID-19 exposure.
Head Coach Travis Green confirms the false positive involved one of the team’s players, not a member of staff.
“At the time, we didn’t know if it was false positive or not. We wanted to take the proper precautions and just felt like it was best if we stayed off the ice and waited to see,” he said.
“Players are tested every day. We didn’t know for sure that it was a false positive until his second test came back negative,” Green added, noting he also felt it was best to give the players the day off for their mental well-being.

The team returned to practice Monday, following the weekend cancellation. Green says the event served as a reminder to everyone involved to keep doing the right thing in terms of following COVID-19 protocols.
“We’ve seen it in other sports. We’ve already seen it in our sport. It’s probably going to be that way — it’s going to happen. It’s a little bit of a wake-up call, too. Just making sure that we’re doing the right things [so] the next time it happens, it won’t be as big of a surprise.”
The hockey club was the first Canadian team forced to cancel training due to a potential exposure. Columbus, Pittsburgh, and Dallas recently had incidents which members on the teams tested positive for the virus.
The team is scheduled to open the regular season on Jan. 13 in Edmonton.
