Claude Julien tried to preserve Carey Price’s shutout Thursday night with a gamble that he might not have taken if the Canadiens weren’t holding a 4-0 lead over the Calgary Flames.
Julien issued a coach’s challenge, claiming that Derek Ryan was offside when Milan Lucic scored with 1:18 to play. The video review upheld the call on the ice that the play was onside and Julien was asked if he would issued the challenge if the score was closer.
“To be honest, probably not,” Julien after the Canadiens won their home opener 4-2. “It was close, really, really close to the point where our chances of winning were slim. At the end of the day, it must have been inconclusive because when we kept looking at it, we couldn’t determine whether it was offside.
“At 4-0, it was worth it to try to keep the shutout,” added Julien. “Worse come to worse, we have to kill a penalty and unfortunately they score on that as well, but if the score had been closer there’s a good chance I wouldn’t have gambled.”
