Braden Holtby and Thatcher Demko have been mostly fine. Holtby spilled a couple rebounds on Wednesday that didn’t lead to trouble and he can survive giving up rebounds right now since it’s the weirdest non-pre-season ever.
The Canucks’ defence remains a work in progress. It’s understandable to a degree, since they are bringing a number of new faces into the mix. They weren’t the greatest in-zone to begin with, instead relying on having the puck more than the other team, simply playing defence by playing keep away.
In the midst of all this, last season the Canucks got incredible goaltending from Markström. That’s the key piece to their eventual success. And before that, he kept them in the hunt.
Now, the North Division playoff picture allows for a lot of leeway. But if the Canucks really are going to have a chance to make it to the post-season, let alone dance, they’re going to need more than good enough from their goalies.
Baertschi’s off
After the Canucks announced Tuesday they’d secured a loan agreement with the Manitoba Moose — Ashton Sautner, Tyler Graovac and Arturs Silovs will suit up for the Jets’ minor league affiliate to start with — I added up the numbers and realized one player who’d been waived earlier this month ahead of being shipped out to a non-NHL destination was unaccounted for: Sven Baertschi.
The Swiss winger put on a brave face ahead of training camp and again at training camp itself.
Well the mystery, such as it is, is solved. He’s off to Utica, which everyone figured would be the outcome, but it was never formally announced.
