The Canadiens are no strangers to starting a season on the road, an in-demand team that all other clubs like to measure themselves up against at the start of a new campaign. This year, with its multi-game series and division of Canadian teams, came with a road trip that ties for the longest of the entire 2020-21 season.
If Montreal had any complaints about the scheduling, they are long forgotten after a 4-0-2 start, with the team yet to lose a game in regulation, and knowing precisely what the issue was — too many penalties — in those two extra-time defeats. They’ve been scoring at will so far, avergaing nearly five goals per contest, and nearly every player has proclaimed he has more to give on both offence and defence.
Tonight the Habs will face a similar squad to their own. Calgary is also built more for top-down depth than top-heavy skill compared to other star-laden clubs in the division, and could offer the sternest test for Montreal this year. Unfortunately for the Flames, the NHL calibre drops away before all the roster spots are filled, and there are some holes that can be exploited that aren’t found on Montreal’s roster.
Now that Claude Julien has home-ice advantage, he can target those flaws, but with the way his skaters have all been performing so far, such tactics may not be necessary to get the better of even a strong opponent.
