Alex Newhook of St. John’s came out in his first shift like a man possessed after missing the game against the Czech Republic on the weekend.
He buried one in the top left-hand corner at the 59-second mark and Canada never looked back, defeating the Russians 5-0 to earn a spot in the gold medal game.
Newhook’s shot rang off the bar at the back of the net and popped out, with play continuing for several seconds before the goal was registered. Even he didn’t know he’d scored.
Dawson Mercer of Bay Roberts assisted on Schneider’s goal.
Canada outshot their rival 34-27. They have never trailed in the tournament, and have yet to allow a single even-strength goal.
The United States edged Finland 4-3 in the other semi-final.
Tonight’s gold medal game starts at 11:00 p.m. NST.
Newhook on scoring on his first shift: “It was great. To get off to a great start was important and our whole team came out flying. It is always nice to get a goal in your first shift and help generate some energy right away for the team. We carried that momentum through the whole game, and it was a great effort from our team.”
