Canadiens send Cole Caufield down to AHL's Laval Rocket - Montreal Gazette

Right-winger had no goals and one assist in 10 games this season. Michael Pezzetta gets called up from Laval to take his spot.

The Canadiens have sent 20-year-old right-winger Cole Caufield down to the AHL’s Laval Rocket.

The announcement was made Monday about 30 minutes before the Canadiens practised at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard. In 10 games this season, Caufield had no goals, one assist and was minus-3.

The Canadiens also announced they have called up forward Michael Pezzetta from the Rocket. Pezzetta was on the ice for practice Monday with the Canadiens, which started at 12:30 p.m. In eight games with the Rocket, Pezzetta has 3-3-6 totals and a team-best plus-7.

The Canadiens, who are off to a 2-8-0 start this season, will play the Detroit Red Wings Tuesday night at the Bell Centre (7 p.m., TSN2, RDS, TSN 690 Radio). The Rocket, who have 4-3-1 record, will play their next game Saturday night in Syracuse against the Crunch.

The 2-8-0 start is the worst for the Canadiens since the 1941-42 season when they were 1-8-1.

The Canadiens also announced Monday that forward Mathieu Perreault has been placed on the injured-reserve list with an eye injury. Perreault had 3-1-4 totals in eight games.

The Canadiens selected Caufield in the first round (15th overall) of the 2019 NHL Draft. Last season, he posted 30-22-52 totals in 31 games with the University of Wisconsin and won the Hobey Baker Award as the top player in U.S. college hockey. He joined the Canadiens after the Wisconsin season finished and had 4-1-5 totals in 10 regular-season games and 4-8-12 totals in 20 playoff games.
