Blue Jays’ Springer day-to-day, won’t play Tuesday vs. Yankees - Sportsnet.ca

Toronto Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo says star George Springer is day-to-day after fouling a ball off his knee and won't play against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.

The 31-year-old outfielder took the ball off his previously injured left knee in Toronto's 8-0 victory over New York on Monday and was lifted from the game after three plate appearances.

“He's grinding it out. He's trying to play for us,” Montoyo said. “And, of course, he's not 100 per cent. The funny thing about it, he got hit where he didn't have protection. So, we're going to call it a knee contusion right now. He should be fine."

Springer has battled a number of injuries this season, including the knee injury from which he initially returned to the lineup from late last month.

When healthy, the team's big free-agent addition has been one of the hottest hitters in the American League and was twice named AL Player of the Week earlier in the summer.

Springer has slashed .260/.354/.567 with 16 home runs and 35 RBI.

Montoyo also said Tuesday that front-line starter Hyun-Jin Ryu, who left Monday's game with forearm tightness, is on track to make his next start.
