What have the Maple Leafs found in 'very versatile' Ondrej Kase? - The Athletic

It doesn’t seem like much.

It’s Jan. 16, 2021, and Ondrej Kase is searching for the puck in the offensive zone during the Bruins’ second game of the season. Devils forward Miles Wood enters his path. No big collision between the two players occurs. Just a slight bump to the head areas that appears to catch Kase by surprise.

He misses the next 52 games with a concussion. In his return to the lineup on May 10, Kase is hit hard by New York Islanders defenceman Adam Pelech. He gets up, finishes the period, but doesn’t return again all season.

Kase totals 26 minutes for the season over three games.

But the 25-year-old says he’s back to 100 percent again this fall.

Kase signed a one-year deal with the Leafs in the offseason worth $1.25 million. If he can stay healthy this season, if he can somehow avoid the scary concussion-related issues that have stalled his NHL career, the Leafs may have a very intriguing player on their hands.

Someone who can do a little bit of everything for head coach Sheldon Keefe; a “very versatile guy.”

“I’m anxious to watch him more,” Keefe said hours before Kase’s preseason debut for the Leafs. “I think he’s got a really good skill set, both offensively, the ability to make plays and finish plays, but also, he’s tenacious on the puck.
