With two weeks left in the regular season, the Toronto Blue Jays have placed pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu on the 10-day IL with what the club says is a mild neck strain.
The 34-year-old Ryu, who is 13-9 (4.34) with a WHIP of 1.209, reported discomfort Saturday morning following a two-inning, five-run effort in a loss to the Minnesota Twins on Friday.
Ryu complained of tightness in his right forearm after a start on Sept. 6 and lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his next start. But Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins responded with a quick “no” when he was asked whether there was any connection between the forearm tightness and the IL stint.
According to Atkins, Ryu did not undergo an MRI before the move was made and the club expects him to miss just one start.
Atkins said that Ross Stripling would “be a key piece” in Ryu’s next scheduled start, Wednesday against the Tampa Bay Rays. Reliever Taylor Saucedo has been recalled from triple-a Buffalo to take Ryu’s place on the roster.
“It wasn’t anything he felt while pitching,” Atkins said, noting that “at this point in the season we didn’t want to just push through.”
