GARRIOCH: Ottawa Senators losing streak takes another turn for the worse as club hits eight straight - Ottawa Sun

Yamamoto gave his club a cozy five-goal lead at 18:48, Nurse had his first of the season at 11:31 and McDavid scored the Oilers fourth power play goal to extend Edmonton’s lead only 42 seconds into the second. It was just shocking to see the way the Senators kept putting themselves behind the eight-ball.

It’s hard to describe the first, but it doesn’t help when the Senators are their own worst enemies.

Not only did the Oilers score on the first shot of the game off a lost face off in their own zone, but it got worse from there as they struck for three power play goals. Only hours after Smith had talked about the fact the Senators had to stay out of the penalty box the club gave one of the best power plays in the league great chances.

Smith had made it clear beforehand his team had to show some discipline and was right about the result because the Senators paid the price in a big way.

“We have to take it one game at time. It’s been a tough stretch but we have to find a way to get that win, take it game-by-game and crawl out of it. We play some of the best teams in the league every night,” said White.

Neal had two goals before the first period was over while Nugent-Hopkins, Barrie and Kahun also chipped in as the Oilers pulled out to a 5-3 lead after twenty minutes. Trailing 2-0 early, White did pull the club to within a goal with his first of the season at 5:38. That was as close as Ottawa got.

The officials had to go upstairs to make sure, White didn’t knock the puck in with a high stick while Tkachuk’s fourth of the season and Batherson’s first of the year late in the first allowed Ottawa to cut Edmonton’s lead to two goals after 20 minutes, however, all it did was light a fire under the Oilers.

Kahun’s goal eight seconds into the first was the quickest the Senators have ever surrendered a goal to start a game. The previous record was nine seconds by Carolina’s Shane Willis on Nov. 12, 2000.

This series continues Tuesday night in Edmonton.
