About Last Night: Canadiens’ special teams just aren't that special - Montreal Gazette

Also those blue retro jerseys are a problem.

Special teams just aren’t that special to the Montreal Canadiens. And perhaps no other team has taken advantage of that more than the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The Leafs are now 3-1-0 against the Canadiens after their 5-3 win last night, and they’ve scored five power play goals against the bleu-blanc-rouge this season. The Canadiens allowed a pair of power play markers in the season opener against the Leafs, a goal at four-on-four in a 4-2 loss Feb. 10, and now three power play goals last night.

Two of them coming from one of the league’s best talents in Auston Matthews, who had yet to score against the Canadiens this year. Until last night.

“We weren’t mentally on point and that’s what hurt us the most,” Canadiens head coach Claude Julien said. “We skated well, we had our chances to score. We created scoring chances too. We had enough to win, but defensively we made too many costly mistakes when we didn’t have the puck. The penalties played a part in that.”

This column has already addressed that the Canadiens need to be more disciplined if they want to win more games. Only four NHL teams have allowed more power play goals than the Canadiens so far this year. Montreal’s penalty kill is now tied for 22nd overall with the Edmonton Oilers.

A team can only accrue so many mental errors while on the penalty kill before changes have to be made. If this continues, the Canadiens may have to go down that road.

Hey Stripes, can you explain something to me?

Jesperi Kotkaniemi had a goal disallowed last night against the Maple Leafs, in which he tried to put the puck in the net during a goalmouth scramble. From my vantage point, it looked as if he pushed Frederik Andersen’s leg pad into the net, causing the puck crossing the line. But some feel Kotkaniemi did not intend to push the pad.

“In my opinion, I think that was a good goal,” Kotkaniemi said. “I’m not 100 per cent (sure) what’s the rule for that. But as long as I’ve been playing, I think that should be called a goal.”

I’m not here to dispute Kotkaniemi’s opinion. He’s played 131 more NHL games than I have. But his goal reminded me of a similar instance during a Maple Leafs-Senators game earlier this week, where Joe Thornton had a goal taken away from him because he pushed the goaltender’s pad into the net.

So, I wasn’t all that surprised that the goal would be taken away. But I am very confused and how the officials got to that point.

The referees initially reviewed Kotkaniemi’s goal, reportedly, to see if the puck had crossed the line. It was soon called a goal before the Maple Leafs used a coach’s challenge to review the play again for goaltender interference. It didn’t take the NHL long to determine there was, and they soon disallowed the goal.

Why can’t the referees determine if there was goaltender interference the first time around? It seemed as if the puck didn’t cross the line until Andersen’s pad was moved. Could officials have not realized in that moment that there was interference? Referees needed a team to challenge for goaltender interference before they could determine there was interference?

You, a Canadiens fan, might be confused as to why I’m sticking on this one play that led to a goal being taken away from your team. It’s the principle of the thing.

The Canadiens are now 0-3-0 in those retro jerseys

It’s a damn shame Montreal fans hate these jerseys because I like them. I thought they were one of the better “Reverse Retro” jerseys unveiled a few months ago. But the Canadiens have yet to win a game in them.

In a sport that thrives on superstitions much like people need air to breathe, it’s not looking good for the Canadiens in those otherwise sweet uniforms.

When people like “Tito” start groaning about the Canadiens’ jersey choices in relation to their on-ice performance. That’s not a great sign.

Also. How does one get “Tito” from Christopher? I’m genuinely curious. I digress.

The best of last night’s liveblog, led by Erik Leijon

I don’t see much optimism here. But, I did find a comment directed at me? Even though I didn’t even run last night’s Liveblog?

Are you gloating now Julian? Yeah deactivated I know — Dom Gotye

I imagine this is in reference to my last About Last Night column in which I took a moment to gloat about a comment I made about Carey Price prior to the Canadiens’ 2-1 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs last weekend.

I’m not going to lie, I’m honoured this comment was even made. It means you guys really read my work.  And that is, truly, one of the biggest compliments you can receive in this business.

Thanks, Dom! I don’t have any Gotye references for you, but I hope you enjoy your Sunday!

We don’t play very well in our own end. Allow too many second and third chances before we clear the zone, Against a team like the Leafs that’s deadly. And when we get scored on we are reverting to last year’s habit allowing another quick one. Coaching in game . Quick recovery. Leadership. Settling the team down. All in short supply. We are better on paper but the results are starting to look familiar. — Derek Stevens
I didn’t like Suzuki and Drouin’s game at all tonight. Anderson was the only one going on that line — James Toth
Let’s see. 10 goals in 6 games. Can’t score. Can’t kill penalties. Can’t win on home ice. Can’t win faceoffs. Another long season. Thank god it is only 56 games. — Mark Reaume Game over. I hate those jerseys. — Jean-Claude Laurent
