Brendan Gallagher scored one of his trademark goals from in front of the net to snap a 1-1 tie and give the Canadiens a 2-1 win over the Maple Leafs on Saturday at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.
Gallagher was battling T.J. Brodie for position in front of the net when he batted down Jeff Petry’s shot from the point, turned and beat Frederik Andersen by tucking a shot under the crossbar.
The win was Montreal’s’ first in three tries against the Leafs this season and they moved to three points back of the Leafs in the battle for first place in the Canadian division.
The Canadiens’ offence, which has struggled over the past five games, showed signs of life in the third period when they outshot the Leafs 12-6. Montreal tied the game at 1-1 when Tyler Toffoli scored his 10th goal of the season.
Gallagher deserves much of the credit on the goal as he won a battle along the right boards and directed the puck toward the middle of the ice. Phil Danault spotted Toffoli as he drove in from the left wing and Andersen was unable to move over in time to stop the shot.

Carey Price turned in a solid performance as he made 21 saves to boost his season record to 5-2-2.
Toronto dominated the first period and scored the only goal when Auston Matthews set up Mitch Marner in front of the net. Matthews won a duel with Danault behind the net and managed to get the puck past Ben Chiarot in front. It was Marner’s first goal in 17 games against the Canadiens, although he does have 13 assists against Montreal.
The most interesting statistic in the first period was the checking. The Canadiens delivered 18 hits, while the Leafs had only one. The disparity was likely due to the fact the Leafs had as wide edge in puck possession. It was more of the same in the second period when the Canadiens outhit the Leafs 21-6.

Claude Julien raised some eyebrows when he left Tomas Tatar, the team’s leading scorer last season, out of the lineup. Artturi Lehkonen moved up from the fourth line as he joined Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Joel Armia on a reunited Finn line, while Corey Perry was elevated from the taxi squad. This was Perry’s ninth game, which means he’ll have to clear waivers before he can play again.
The Canadiens will have a chance to rest and get some quality practice time over the next week because they don’t play again until next Saturday when they make a return trip to Toronto. The Leafs will face the Ottawa Senators on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in Toronto.
