If you haven’t already noticed, the Montreal Canadiens have been able to send out more than one line for the purposes of scoring.
The team is tied, with Vancouver, for the most goals scored in the league to this point. But they also average more goals and shots per game than any other team. The Canadiens have had teams that shot heavily before, but this year’s edition is able to finish a bit better than in past years.
It’s a noticeable change from previous seasons where the majority of goals came from Tomas Tatar and Brendan Gallagher, playing alongside Phillip Danault on their top line.
The trio is still intact to this day with all three players providing some form of production whether through goals or assists. But they’re no longer the team’s most productive line and they don’t need to be.
There’s the team’s arguably most skilled trio, the Jonathan Drouin-Nick Suzuki-Josh Anderson, who has outgained Tatar-Danault-Gallagher while providing a balanced attack. Through 10 games, Nick Suzuki, Jonathan Drouin, and Josh Anderson have combined for 10 goals and 28 points and are third, fourth, and fifth, respectively in team scoring. Anderson scored twice in Montreal’s 5-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks Tuesday night with Suzuki earning assists on both goals.
