Report: NBA’s Board of Governors approves 22-team return-to-play format - Sportsnet.ca

The NBA’s Board of Governors has approved the league’s proposed 22-team return-to-play format, according to The Athletic‘s Shams Charania.

The NBA plans to resume play beginning July 31 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Walt Disney World near Orlando, Fla., with the NBA Finals reportedly expected to end no later than Oct. 12.

Included in the 22-team return-to-play format will be the 16 existing teams that were already in playoff spots when the NBA suspended its season on March 11, along with five more Western Conference teams and one additional Eastern Conference club.

These six additional teams are reportedly the New Orleans Pelicans, Portland Trail Blazers, Phoenix Suns, Sacramento Kings, San Antonio Spurs and Washington Wizards.

These 22 teams will vie for playoff seeding in a traditional Eastern and Western Conference style with an eight-game regular season when play resumes with a possible play-in tournament for the final playoff spot.

Additional important dates around the restart, according to Charania, include training camp for teams in their respective markets beginning June 30, with travel to Disney on July 7, free agency beginning on Oct. 18 and next season’s training camp and opening night tentatively targeted for Nov. 10 and Dec. 1, respectively.

The NBA has also reportedly settled on a date of Aug. 25 for the draft lottery and Oct. 15 for the 2020 draft.
