Michigan's Devin Bush Jr. soars up Mel Kiper's NFL draft board - Detroit Free Press

Devin Bush Jr.'s post-NFL combine rise has continued.

The former Michigan linebacker caught the eyes of just about everyone when he turned in a blazing 4.43-second 40-yard dash at the combine back in early March. Since then, debate has raged about whether or not he'll be the first inside linebacker off the board in this spring's draft.

ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. published his latest projection this week. He still has LSU's Devin White as the top middle linebacker, going No. 5 overall.

But Bush soared up his list, up 19 spots to No. 11 overall.

"I have gone with the other Devin in previous Mock Drafts — LSU's Devin White — but Bush isn't far behind White as the best middle linebacker in this class. One of the prospects I picked out as a combine riser because of his workouts, Bush is always around the ball on film," Kiper said. "The Bengals just brought back Preston Brown in free agency, but Bush could play any of the linebacker spots at the next level. He's a three-down player."

The 5-foot-11, 234-pound Bush had as close to a perfect combine as he could've asked for earlier this month.

First, he measured in at a legit 5-foot-11, putting a stop to questions from scouts and teams about whether or not he was shorter than what teams had listed him at. Bush is still a bit undersized in the height department, but it could've been much worse.

Then the really important stuff: He ran.

Bush's 40-time was actually better than the 4.46 former Michigan star Jabrill Peppers turned in at the combine two years ago. For point of reference, Bush ran the same time that former Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson logged in 2013.

The tape has often speaks for itself with Bush, who as the former Michigan All-American put up 194 tackles (19.5 for a loss), 10 sacks, 15 pass breakups and an interception during his three-year college career.

"What you see on tape is real, that's what you're going to get 100 percent of the time," Bush said at the combine. "I'm a tough player. I play hard.

"And my film speaks for itself."

Rashan Gary is the only other Michigan player listed on Kiper's latest first-round mock. Gary held steady at No. 9 to the Buffalo Bills.
