Darryl Sutter won’t be back at the Saddledome next season.
The Calgary Flames announced Monday morning that Sutter has been relieved of his duties as head coach.

“On behalf of ownership and all Calgary Flames fans, we want to thank Darryl for his cumulative years of service to the Calgary Flames and to the community at large,” said John Bean, the president and CEO of Calgary Sports & Entertainment Corporation, in a statement.
The Flames failed to earn an invite to the 2023 Stanley Cup playoffs, falling well short of expectations amidst rumours of a rift between the bench boss and several of his star players. A soured relationship with the skipper was also one of the reasons that Brad Treliving departed as general manager.

Now, the Flames are searching for both a GM and head coach.
“At the end of every season, you do a thorough review of your season,” said Flames president of hockey operations Don Maloney in a press conference at the Saddledome. “I interviewed 25 players, coaches, coaching staff, training staff, spoke to prominent agents who represent key players on our team. And it became clear to me that we needed a new voice to guide us forward.
