Kyle Dubas says he “will roll from here” in his first public comments since getting fired by the Maple Leafs, but where will he end up?
In a Tuesday morning tweet that was more to do with thanking everyone in his past than giving much glimpse of his future with another team, the former general manager said he would “not be getting into specifics of what I consider to be reasonable and consistent, but private discussions”.

That’s in response to club president Brendan Shanahan’s unprecedented public detailing of last week’s circumstances surrounding Dubas’ departure. Shanahan said Dubas’ revelation to the media eight days ago that he was wavering on a return because of the toll the past season took on him and his family put doubt in his mind whether he should extend his expiring contract, followed by what Shanahan claimed was a late change in terms presented by Dubas’ agent that further soured relations between the once-close duo.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have permission to speak to Shanahan about either their president of hockey operations opening or as GM, but Dubas did not address that Tuesday. Much speculation about his role in a rumoured power struggle with Shanahan and the board of directors on hockey related decisions had followed Shanahan’s comments.

“While I understand there is interest surrounding the circumstances of my departure, I will not get into the specifics,” read part of Dubas’s statement. “In the days that I felt I needed to assess and evaluate my own view to the future, both with respect to the necessary direction of the club and ensuring that I had the full support of my family for what I knew would be required in the off-season and in the years to follow, the organization, as is their right to do, decided to go in a different direction.”
Dubas indeed asked for time to speak with his family, but had said he would either come back to the Leafs or take time off. The firing changed that narrative, leaving people wondering how burned out the GM really was, while Shanahan scrambling to find a new GM with several front burner contractual issues.
He ended his message, which was signed ‘The Dubas Family’ thanking “an extremely passionate fan base” and the Leafs for nine years of employment, from the MLSE board of directors to the ushers at Scotiabank Arena, as well as players, coaches and staff.
“It was a tremendous pleasure to work alongside you. We will roll from here.”
