The Florida Panthers defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-2 in overtime Sunday to win Game 3 and take a commanding 3-0 series lead. Here’s what you need to know:
- Sam Reinhart scored the game winner at 3:02 in overtime. Anthony Duclair and Carter Verhaeghe also scored for the Panthers.
- Toronto’s starting goalie Ilya Samsonov left the game and didn’t return in the second period after colliding with Luke Schenn. Joseph Woll replaced Samsonov in the net.
- Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe did not have an update on Samsonov after the game.
- Game 4 is Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET.
The Athletic’s instant analysis:
Reinhart nets winner
At 3:02 of overtime, Panthers forward Reinhart scored a wraparound game winner. Though the Leafs pushed back in the third period, this was a game that the visitors, having committed turnover after turnover in their own zone, didn’t deserve to win. Reinhart’s goal was fitting. — Kloke
Samsonov leaves in second period
An early second-period collision between Leafs defenseman Schenn and Samsonov sent the Leafs goalie to the dressing room and out of the game. With Matt Murray, once thought to be the first-choice starter for the Leafs, out with a concussion and not having played since April 2, the spotlight on an already tenuous Leafs goaltending situation got brighter.
Woll, who played more games with the Marlies than the Leafs this season had last played in the third period of Game 1 against the Tampa Bay Lightning, came on in relief for Samsonov. He quickly allowed an Anthony Duclair breakaway goalie.
But afterward, he settled down, controlled his net as best he could and stopped 18 of 21 shots. How much Woll is relied upon moving forward in the playoffs remains to be seen. — Kloke
Leafs get surprise contributions but need more from core
The Leafs’ star forward core of Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, William Nylander and John Tavares had failed to find the back of the net in the first two games of the series against the Panthers. The team’s depth players needed to step up and they did.
The Leafs’ first two goals of the game came from Sam Lafferty, with his first playoff goal, and Erik Gustafsson, a sparingly-used defenceman who added just his second career playoff goal. David Kampf also won 93 percent of his face-offs and was arguably the Leafs’ best center.
The lack of scoring from the team’s core is concerning. The Leafs who needed to contribute with their season on the line simply did not. Heading into the second period, Matthews, Marner and Tavares were the team’s three worst forwards in terms of five-on-five possession and combined for just two shots.
For the Leafs to claw their way back into the series and save their season, they’ll need far more from the players who produced in the regular season. — Kloke
