Avalanche get: Forward Artturi Lehkonen.
Canadiens get: Defenseman Justin Barron and a second-round pick in 2024.
The grades
Corey Pronman: Artturi Lehkonen is a well-rounded forward despite not being the most physically imposing. He’s a good skater, competes hard, and has some offense. The offensive parts of his game are secondary on a good team, he won’t drive a line, but he has some skill, hockey sense and finishing ability. He adds versatility to a lineup to go with the fact he has another year under control as a pending RFA with six years in the league already. On a team loaded with skill, he will slot in nicely into their bottom six.
Justin Barron is a very good prospect. He’s a tall, right-handed shot who is an excellent skater. He’s not a dynamo with the puck and not a power-play guy in the NHL on a good team but he can make a solid first pass and projects to be able to move pucks competently in the NHL. With his skating, he can play against good players and be a big factor in transition. He has a solid chance to become a top-four defenseman in the NHL.
I expected Colorado to move Drew Helleson, which they did in the Josh Manson deal, but whether they were willing to move Barron was the question coming into the deadline. I’m fine with it as Flags Fly Forever and they are the Stanley Cup favorite currently.
