The last time fans were in the Bell Centre, many were probably expecting their team to be playing its final game of the year, down 3-2 to the favoured Toronto Maple Leafs and not given much of a chance to come back. The percentage of the 2,500 in attendance probably gradually increased as the Canadiens were bombarded in the overtime period that game, with a killing blow seeming inevitable. Instead, they got to cheer a win as Jesperi Kotkaniemi won it in overtime.

Since then, the Canadiens have won three more games on the road, closing out the series with Toronto, then nabbing the first two games from the Jets in Round 2. Now those fans who will be in the Bell Centre stands are witnessing a team in control of its series, and a deep playoff run is now a real possibility.

Friday’s game was one of the greatest defensive performances of the post-season. Perhaps not the most exciting, but the mood at the end of a 1-0 victory was no less jubilant than it would have been for a higher-scoring game. Missing a few of their top players, Winnipeg was probably feeling they would have better luck making it a defensive duel, but the Canadiens won that as well following their 5-3 win two nights earlier. Theur hope now turns to Paul Statsny, who, after missing an important Game 2, can’t be at 100%. If the addition of an offensive star isn’t enough to turn the tide, there will be few solutions left for Paul Marice to propel his team to an epic comeback.
