Jays score 4 in the ninth, beat Braves - Bluebird Banter

Blue Jays 8 Braves 4

A Sweep!

After the first inning, we thought it was going to be a very short start for Ross Stripling.

He gave up a leadoff home run to Ronald Acuna. Then there were three singles before he got to two outs. One of the singles was a popup that landed in front of Jonathan Davis in center field. Davis seemed to get a slow start on the ball, I thought it should have been caught. The other two weren’t hit hard either. But we were down 2-0, with two guys on, and just one out.

Then Stripling struck out Dansby Swanson and Jeff Mathis. From there on, Ross was terrific. After those four hits, he didn’t give up another, and allowed just 1 walk, with 9 strikeouts. Just a great start.

And Ross played a big part in our two-run fifth inning. In the fifth, down a run:

  • Reese McGuire led off with a single.
  • Stripling put down a bunt with 2 strikes to move Reese to second.
  • After Marcus Semien lined out, we got consecutive singles from Bo Bichette (scoring McGuire), Vladimir Guerrero, and Teoscar Hernandez (scoring Bo). Suddenly we were u 3-2.

I prefer the DH but it is fun to see a pitcher contribute with the bat.

Unfortunately, the Braves got two runs in the sixth, off Tim Mayza. Dansby Swanson hit a 2-run homer, putting us behind again.

But we tied it up again in the eighth. Teoscar Hernandez led off with a rare walk and Cavan Biggio doubled him home. It would have been nice to score Biggio too. Lourdes Gurriel moved him to third with a ground out, but Jonathan Davis and, pinch-hitter, Randal Grichuk couldn’t bring him home.

And a four-run ninth put us out in front again. Danny Jansen started us off with a single (nice to see him get a hit). Semien singled him to second. And Bo doubled them both home. Vlad hit a ball hard, but right at the shortstop. Bo got to third on Teoscar’s single. Cavan Biggio his second RBI double of the game and we were up by three. A Gurriel fly ball to the track put us up by four.

We had 13 hits. Two each for Marcus, Bo, Teoscar, and Cavan. Every batter in the starting lineup had a hit.

After Mayza’s inning, our bullpen did a great job:

  • Joel Payamps had a clean inning.
  • Travis Bergen gave up a walk in his inning.
  • Jordan Romano got the ninth, striking out the side in a non-save situation (with Vlad mimicking his deep knee bend from first base.

It is worth mentioning that the plate umpire had an interesting strike zone. Anything within four inches of the outside of the plate was a strike. The game was a long advertisement for robo umps.

The Braves had a couple of players come out of the game with injuries:

  • Cristian Pache came out of the game early. I didn’t see the injury, but Braves say right hamstring tightness.
  • Ronald Acuna came out in the seventh, he turned his ankle on the bag at first, trying to beat out a ground out. Adding to the injury, he was called safe but the call was overturned on review.

Jays of the Day: Bo (.443 WPA, 2 for 5, 3 RBI), Teoscar (.133, 2 for 4, walk), Jansen (.115, 1 for 1), McGuire (.101, 1 for 2) and Biggio (.084, 2 for 3, 2 walks, 2 doubles, 2 RBI, and some nice play at third).

Suckage: Mayza (-.303) and Davis (-.091, 1 for 5, and not making that catch in the first). Randal had a -.092, all on the one pinch-hit at-bat.

Tomorrow we start a series against the Phillies. 7:30 Eastern start. Matz (5-2, 4.86) vs. Velasquez (1-0, 4.18).

We had 678 comments in the GameThread. I led us to a very enjoyable victory.
