The Maple Leafs look different this year. That's because they are something new - The Athletic

Seventeen years is a long, long time in pro sports.

Heck, it’s a long time in life. I’m sure all of us were in much different places 17 years ago, back in the spring of 2004.

The Maple Leafs have been through a lot in that time. Most of it wasn’t good. The salary cap in 2005 ushered in an era of extreme managerial incompetence, and the franchise fell from perennial contention in the early 2000s to laughingstock status between 2005-06 and 2015-16.

The Leafs appeared in just seven playoff games in that decade, which is last among the NHL’s 30 franchises. Those seven games gave Toronto fans a new humiliation to add to their rivals’ lexicon, one to join 1967: “It was 4-1.”

Anyway, that’s an aside.
