T.J. Brodie is a Maple Leaf.
The Leafs on Friday night bolstered their blue line, as general manager Kyle Dubas hoped they would be able to do, signing the 30-year-old defenceman to a four-year, $20-million US contract.
A native of Chatham, Ont., Brodie spent the previous 634 games of his National Hockey League career with the Calgary Flames, putting up 266 points (48 goals and 218 assists).
Brodie shoots left, but plays the right side, and is expected to slot in alongside Morgan Rielly on the Leafs’ top pairing.
The signing puts the Leafs a shade over the $81.5-million US salary cap for the 2020-21 season, with restricted free agents Ilya Mikheyev and Travis Dermott still in line for new contracts. During the off-season, NHL teams are permitted to be 10% over the cap.
“We have flexibility, it’s just a matter of how big a splash we want to make,” Leafs general manager Kyle Dubas said earlier Friday, after Toronto signed veteran forward Wayne Simmonds.
Dubas had been in touch with Don Meehan, the agent for defenceman Alex Pietrangelo, the No. 1 prize on the open market. We would presume that the Pietrangelo talk can be put to bed, at least where it involves the Leafs.
The Leafs have had interest in Brodie for a while. Last summer, a trade involving Brodie and Nazem Kadri didn’t pan out. Not long after, Kadri was traded to the Colorado Avalanche.
