NFL Draft 2020: Here’s how a Chargers-Giants QB trade-back deal could work, now that Philip Rivers is out in - NJ.com

The Chargers officially need a quarterback, now that they announced they’re moving on from pending free agent Philip Rivers.

So if they want to draft a quarterback instead of paying big money to sign, say, Tom Brady, then could the Giants factor in to those plans?

Sure they could, even though Giants general manager Dave Gettleman has never traded back.

The Chargers are sixth in the 2020 NFL Draft order, one spot behind the quarterback-needy Dolphins. The Bengals are surely going to pick LSU quarterback Joe Burrow first overall.

The teams picking second, third, and fourth — Washington, Lions, and Giants — won’t be drafting a quarterback. There’s a chance the Chargers could try to move up from No. 6 to No. 4, so they can leap the Dolphins — perhaps to draft Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

Of course, the Dolphins now know the Chargers need a quarterback, with Rivers out. So after free agency unfolds, Miami might opt to move to second or third, in order to keep the Chargers at bay. The Dolphins have the draft pick ammo to make it happen rather easily.

That would assure the Dolphins could get the second quarterback off the board — maybe Tagovailoa. Or perhaps the Chargers make that move to No. 2 or No. 3 before Miami can, if they determine No. 4 isn’t high enough to stay ahead of the Dolphins (and it might not be).

The Chargers, in that case, could do exactly what the Jets did in 2018, when they traded up for quarterback Sam Darnold.

But let’s say the Chargers do indeed want to leap from sixth to fourth. What could Gettleman get in that trade?

According to the draft trade value chart, the fourth pick is worth 1,800 points, and the sixth pick is worth 1,600 points. The Chargers would have to make up that 200-point difference, at least, presuming this trade involves only picks and not players.

The Chargers just so happen to pick 71st in Round 3 — fairly close to the 68th pick, which the Jets now own, because of Gettleman’s Leonard Williams deal last season. And the 71st pick is worth 235 points.

That could be enough to get a deal done, but Gettleman might be able to demand more. While that value is slightly higher than the 200-point difference, a team generally surrenders a bunch more when trading up for a quarterback.

In 2018, the Jets traded up from sixth to third, in order to draft Darnold. They made that deal with the Colts, who got three second-round picks — Nos. 37 and 49 in 2018 and a to-be-determined second-rounder in 2019 (which wound up being No. 34).

The third pick is worth 2,200 points, compared to 1,600 points for No. 6. The total value of the three picks the Jets gave the Colts (1,500 points) far exceeds the 600-point difference. That’s just the way things go when you’re trading up in the draft to get a quarterback.

So maybe Gettleman can squeeze more than just a third-rounder out of the Chargers, in a fourth-to-sixth move. He probably can, actually.

With that in mind, here’s where the Chargers pick in Rounds 2, 4, and 5:

Round 2: 37th (530 points)

Round 4: 102nd (92 points)

Round 5: 133rd (39.5 points)
