Latest Yankees’ Aaron Judge injury news: How long he’s been hurt, what’s next - NJ.com

TAMPA — The Yankees hoped their injury nightmares had been left in 2019.

Then lefty starter James Paxton needed lower back surgery that could hold him out until June.

And on Tuesday, right fielder Aaron Judge was dealing right shoulder soreness that kept him from throwing and hitting.

Judge and Yankees manager Aaron Boone each said they’re not worried about the injury. It’s not the first time he’s dealt with shoulder problems. After the 2017 season, Judge needed arthroscopic surgery to fix cartilage in his left shoulder.

The Yankees don’t know when Judge will be back to full strength or when he’ll play in his first spring training game. The Yankees’ spring opener is Saturday.

What Judge said: “It probably started a couple weeks ago, when I first got down here. I’ve been hitting since early November, and working out since early November, and once I got down here, I hit on the field, hitting outside. I just thought it’d be best to — I just felt a little soreness up in the shoulder. Nothing alarming, nothing that I was like, ‘Hey, we need to really check this out.’ So I said, ‘Hey, we got plenty of time going into spring training, let’s take it slow these next couple days, make sure everything’s right, and then kind of go from there.’”

What Boone said: "Some crankiness, soreness in his shoulder. We’ve been treating it, and we want to make sure we’re treating it conservatively and get it in a really good spot before we hit the ground running. So, I feel like it’s a pretty minor thing, and probably in the next couple of days start ramping him back up from a volume of things. But just something we wanted to get ahead of while we’re at this point in the calendar.

“It’s been some time over the last couple of weeks, getting some soreness in there. He was doing all his work over at (the player development complex) and hitting and we thought we’d get out ahead of it and shut it down a little bit. So, real vigorous things, like the hitting and throwing and stuff — we did put him through a battery of tests. So he had the MRI and everything and he was kind of what his shoulder’s always been. Not much change. We don’t think it’s a big issue, but while we had the time on our side, we want to make sure we’re smart and we get this out of there completely and then we roll.”
