Let’s try that again.
Last week, former Astros manager AJ Hinch gave his first interview since being fired following MLB commissioner Rob Manfred’s report on Houston’s sign-stealing scandal during the 2017 season.
As you recall, MLB Network’s Tom Verducci asked Hinch if he could “assure us there were no buzzers or anything like that being used.” Hinch’s answer missed the mark big-time.
“Well, the commissioner’s — we got investigated for three months,” Hinch said. "The commissioner’s office did as thorough of an investigation as anyone could imagine was possible. I know you mentioned about the emails and the texts and the messages and I believe it.”
His non-denial denial did not sit well, so Hinch tried to clarify his comments in a statement Wednesday to Sports Illustrated.
“After my interview with Tom Verducci last week, there has been a significant reaction to my answer to the ‘buzzer’ question. To be clear, I have never seen any such device used in baseball. I am not aware of any such device existing or being utilized with the Astros, the players, or any other team. I was first asked about such devices during the investigation by MLB. In my interview with Tom, I acknowledged the commissioner’s report as evidence due to the in-depth nature of the investigation, not as an intended non-answer or a way to elude the question.”
The Astros fired Hinch and general manager Jeff Luhnow last month following Manfred’s report. The team also was fined $5 million and lost its first-and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021.
Alex Cora, who was Hinch’s bench coach in Houston, was implicated in the investigation. The Boston Red Sox fired Cora as manager the day after Manfred’s report came out. Manfred continues investigating allegations Cora led a sign-stealing operation with Boston in 2018.
Carlos Beltran was the only player named in Manfred’s findings. The New York Mets fired Beltran as manager three days following the report. A story this week by The Athletic revealed Beltran to be the “Godfather” of the Astros’ sign-stealing operation.
