We’ll have to wait for official word from the NHL, but sources are saying that the Vancouver Canucks versus Edmonton Oilers Pacific Division final series will likely start May 7.

Despite a statement from Canucks star J.T. Miller that he’d heard the series would start Sunday, that doesn’t appear to be the case.

The original schedule for the Canucks versus Nashville Predators series had Game 7 scheduled for Sunday if necessary, but the behind-the-scenes logistics at Rogers Arena would have been less than ideal: it’s the off day between two Pearl Jam concerts at the arena, which means the stage and other back-of-house items would have been taken down and removed from the arena. Also that morning is the BMO Vancouver Marathon, which would have Pacific Boulevard closed in the morning.

Conceivably the league could have just scheduled Game 1 of Canucks versus Oilers instead of Game 7.

But sources suggest that Game 1 of the series will likely be on Tuesday. Pearl Jam’s second concert of their world tour-opening weekend is on Monday, Tuesday is the next available open date at the arena, outside of Sunday.

And that would allow for the Canucks to host Game 2 Thursday, before the series shifts to Edmonton for Game 3 on Saturday. Sportsnet would see a Saturday game in Edmonton as ideal.

We’ll just see what the NHL says.

More to come…
