Canada Soccer names Jesse Marsch as head coach of men’s national team - Sportsnet.ca

Canada Soccer has concluded its search for a new men’s national team coach, with Jesse Marsch joining the organization.

Kevin Blue, Canada Soccer’s new CEO and general secretary, announced the hiring with a social media post of him making a video call to Marsch.

“I’m about to call Jesse Marsch and confirm that he will the next head coach of our Canadian men’s national team,” says Blue, before connecting the call. “We’ve been working on getting this done and excited on finally having it ready to go.”

“I appreciate so much your trust and belief in me,” says Marsch on the call. “I assure you I will pay you back at every level. And this team is gonna be something the entire Canadian community is going to be so excited about.”

Canada conducted an extensive search for a new coach, which included the 50-year-old Marsch, who most recently managed Leeds in England’s Premier League from February 2022 to February 2023. Canada reportedly reached out to former Manchester United bench boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer while both Frank Lampard and Jose Mourinho rejected opportunities.

Marsch is expected to lead Canada in the upcoming pre-Copa America games in the Netherlands and France.

The 50-year-old American was the first coach of the then-Montreal Impact when they jumped to MLS in 2011, and he went on to coach the New York Red Bulls. He then spent time with Red Bull Salzburg in Austria and a brief tenure with German club RB Leipzig.

Canada has been looking for a new head coach since John Herdman left last year to take the Toronto FC job. Mauro Biello served as interim head coach after Herdman’s departure.

Canada is a co-host of the 2026 World Cup with the U.S. and Mexico and qualified for the 2022 Qatar-hosted event for the second time in history.
