Before we knew the full extent of what actually happened to Carlos Sainz’s car, we saw him extract himself from the Ferrari with no issues and, honestly, didn’t think much of it. But with the full extent of the damage revealed, it turns out he really was very lucky 😳
We managed to see a full eight minutes of FP1 before a red flag was thrown when Sainz drove over a lifted water valve cover, significantly damaging his Ferrari and being forced to pull over on the side of the track after losing the engine.
It was the first step of a rather disastrous first day for the inaugural Las Vegas GP, and the damage to the Ferrari resulted in it ending up with a new chassis, engine, energy store and control electronics.
But that wasn’t all that had been broken…
Talking to the media, Carlos revealed that hitting the object also damaged his seat. He said: “I’m ok, thank you. I had a pretty big hit on my back and my neck after the incident that you guys all saw.
“Unfortunately, obviously a chassis, the power unit, battery, even my seat was damaged after the incident, which involved a huge effort from all the mechanics and the team to put together a completely brand new car for FP2 that allowed me to complete the session, which was I think in my opinion a heroic effort.” Scary stuff! 😬
As Ferrari has had to fit an additional power unit into his car, he has gone outside of his penalty-free allotment and will be given a 10-place grid penalty for the race on Saturday night. The team did attempt to get the stewards to waive the sanction as the incident wasn’t their fault, but the FIA confirmed a penalty would be applied.
At the end of the day, we’re just glad Carlos is okay!
