Andre De Grasse's first track athletics race on home soil since winning 200m gold at Tokyo 2020 in 2021 ended in disappointment on Friday (29 July).
The star attraction at the Canadian Track and Field Championships 2023 failed to progress from the semi-finals in the men's 100m at Langley’s McLeod Athletic Park in British Colombia. He was ninth fastest overall with a time of 10.21 seconds.
Aaron Brown won the final, claiming his fifth-straight national title, in a time of 10.08 seconds. Brendon Rodney was second in 10.12, with Bismark Boateng third in 10.17.
The event doubled as trials for the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
De Grasse, who medalled in each of his three sprint races at the Tokyo Olympics, is one of several big-name Canadians trying to secure their spots for August's World Championships at the event. He missed last year's Trials due to Covid.
The three-time world medallist has just recovered from a groin tightness that forced him to skip the Bauhaus-Galan in Stockholm.
De Grasse's time in the 100m wasn't enough to book his spot on the plane to Budapest in August. He is due to compete in the men's 200m at the Canadian championships on Saturday, which will be his last chance to record a qualifying standard time for the worlds.
But it will not just be the races on the 28-year-old's mind. The McLeod Athletic Park will mark another momentous occasion for the sprint star and his 4x100m teammates from Tokyo.
De Grasse, Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake and Brendon Rodney will be awarded their Olympic silver medals on Saturday (29 July) following the disqualification of Team Great Britain from the men's 4x100m relay, for a positive doping test.
Another reigning Olympic champion, Damian Warner, missed the cut in the preliminary round of the men's 400m. He'll compete in the hurdles on Saturday.
