The Canadian women's hockey team is getting contributions from every part of the roster early in the Beijing Olympics.
Sixteen players registered points as Canada improved to 2-0 with an 11-1 blowout of Finland on Saturday.
That's 23 goals in two games for the Canadians, who have recorded double-digit goal totals in consecutive Olympic contests for the first time since 2010.
“This group is pretty special, and coming to the rink every day is pretty easy with this crew," Canada's Jamie Lee Rattray said. "Even last night, we used the energy of the opening ceremonies, it was special to do that together, especially behind such a great leader like (flag-bearer Marie-Philip) Poulin and share that moment with her. You could just feel the energy in the air, even this morning after we had a bit of a longer night last night, it was worth it and we used that energy to our advantage today.”
Sarah Nurse and Brianne Jenner each had three goals, marking the third time in Olympic history that Canada had a pair of players with hat tricks in the same game.
The Finns, who upset Canada in the 2019 world championship semifinals, are now 0-2 in Beijing. They were outshot badly by the United States in a 5-2 loss in their opener before getting crushed by Canada -- a sign that the North American rivals may be at a different level than the rest of the field.
It has been a rough tournament for the Finns, whose head coach, Pasi Mustonen, returned home after the first game because of family health concerns.
Meanwhile, young Sarah Fillier had her second two-goal game in a row for Canada, while Laura Stacey also netted a pair.
"I’ve been waiting a long time for this opportunity and I’ve been putting in the work as well as the rest of the girls," Fillier, 21, said, as per IIHF.com. "So putting in two goals today and two goals the other game is good for my confidence and good for the team."
Natalie Spooner had four assists to give her a tournament-leading nine points (two goals, seven helpers)
In goal, Ann-Renée Desbiens did her part, making 25 saves.
Next for the Canadians is a game against the Russians on Sunday at 11:10 p.m. ET. A showdown with the Americans looms the following day.
Meanwhile, Hockey Canada said forward Melodie Daoust is day-to-day with an upper-body injury suffered against Switzerland in the tourney opener. Daoust is expected to return at some point in the Olympics.
United States 5, Russia 0
The score stayed relatively close for much of the contest, but the shot count wasn't with the Americans having the 62-12 edge. Savannah Harmon had a goal and two assists for the U.S.
Czech Republic 3, Sweden 1
The Czechs are now 2-0 in their Olympic debut in the sport, putting them in a tie for the lead with Japan in Group B. The top three teams in the lower group make the quarterfinals, joining all five teams from Group A. Tereza Vanisova scored two goals for the Czechs. The Swedes are now 0-2 and in danger of missing the knockout stage for the first time.
Japan 6, Denmark 2
Japan kept pace with the Czechs with a victory over winless Denmark. Horuka Toko had a goal and two assists for Japan, while her sister Ayaka had a goal and an assist.
